A Film by Mike Gordon of Phish Outside Out is the story of a boy, and a guitar, and his desire to be a true artist - one that is neither bound by convention nor the approval of his friends, family or a girl. Rick tries desperately to get into music school and avoid dad's plan: military academy. But, his playing isn't very good. As a last resort, he finds Col. Bruce Hampton, Ret., the peculiar guitar teacher who teaches students to "unlearn" everything they ever knew. With the music school auditions making his guitar playing worse and worse, Rick is forced to look inside his soul and outside his head to find out.
Mike Gordon is the bassist for the Vermont-based rock band Phish. This is his first full-length feature film, an experimental narrative slash mock-infomercial that screams softly with bizarreness. With a mixture of abstract editing, psychedelic slash symbolic images, and priceless scenes with the mystical music teacher Hampton,
Outside Out keeps viewers both intrigued and baffled.
